Spring is underway in Oregon! Our beautiful Cascades are once again experiencing a time of renewal. Many of us view spring not only as a season of cleaning our homes, but also a time to refresh its style. Probably one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways is to compliment your home’s carpet flooring with stylish area rugs. Here, we’ll take a quick look at how to do just that.

Choosing Area Rug Colors

See that strange looking wheel just to the right? It’s called a color wheel – and it’s one of the easiest guides to choosing the right colors for your next design project (in this case, of course, your home’s style). Basically, colors are best complimented either by those directly adjacent or the one on the opposite end of the wheel. For example, red is usually complimented either by orange and burgundy or green. Admittedly, it’s a bit of an oversimplification of color theory, but enough to guide and inform your next home makeover.

Organization

Area rugs help organize the style and layout of any room. For example, in a living room, rugs may be used to define and compliment the lounging area, a work desk, home entertainment center and (of course) the walkway.

Area rugs can be used to define a space within a room (hence the name). However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that rugs must fill the full width of their area. In fact, a common arrangement is to have sofas, side tables and chairs placed with only one or two legs on the rug. So, it isn’t essential to purchase a rug that will cover every element of a given space; it just needs to form a sense of cohesion. To achieve this, just try to ensure consistent space around your rug.

Don’t Be Shy About Using Area Rugs With Carpet

Yes, area rugs are typically used to compliment hard surface flooring – but do they have a place with carpet? Absolutely! In fact, many of the same principles – contrasting tones, organization and enhanced style – still apply with carpet flooring. And, of course, they’re less likely to slide out of place. Just remember that it’s usually best to select a tone and pattern that’s different from your room’s carpet flooring.
